| Ducks! Help! |
| Each Spring / Summer we encounter countless calls regarding ducks and duck poop in the swimming pools. First off, this is more of a nuisance than a danger. When the water is in proper balance, the chlorine should quickly take care of any bacteria that the remnants may bring, although the feces should be removed and filtered as soon as possible. What can be done? While there are no fool proof methods, we have seen some creative attempts at keeping the ducks at bay from our properties. Fishing Line: The method that we have seen the best results with is fishing line strung in a criss cross pattern 12-15 ft above the pool and pool deck area. This interrupts their flight / landing pattern and the ducks will not often try to land through the line. Of course, it is important that this is installed in a safe manner so that no one gets caught in the line. Toy snakes on the pool deck: This methods has seen mixed results. Although it may keep the ducks away for a time, ducks are smart and will soon figure out that the snakes are not moving, therefore, not posing them any real threat. Inflatables in the pool: We've seen everything from giant floating turtle rafts, to beach balls and noodles floating in the pool. Again, depending on how daring your ducks are, this may or may not help. |
